Sources of Strength

Our vision is to empower a well world

Sources of Strength is an international best practice youth mental health promotion and suicide prevention program in place in the Alamosa School District which is designed to harness the power of peer social networks to create healthy norms and culture. The strength based program's goal is to ultimately prevent suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse using art, storytelling small group work, and games.

The evidence-based program is "one of the most rigorously evaluated upstream prevention programs in the world." Program outcomes have shown an increase in feeling a sense of connection to adults and an increased likelihood of getting help from an adult for a suicidal friend. In addition adult support and the concept of seeking help are seen in a more positive light. An overall engagement in school has also been observed. Encouragingly, the largest increases in positive changes have been noted in students who already have a history of suicidal ideation.
