The weekend of September 23rd was a busy one for Shooting Stars as celebrations were held to commemorate Hispanic Heritage month and the landmark Maestas Case of Alamosa at the Historic Zapata Park. The Five Star Riders Car Show kicked off the weekend as they held a Muscle Cars & Scrapers Campus Takeover Car Show in the Adams State University McDaniel Hall Parking Lot from 9am to 3:30pm.
This was followed by the Maestas Case Cruise down Ross Ave to Historic Zapata Park. The Maestas Case was a lawsuit that challenged the school segregation of Hispanic students in Alamosa, Colorado. The case was won in 1914. It was one of the first successful attempts to challenge Hispanic segregation. Car show participants cruised down Ross avenue, the route that Hispanic students had to take to school and ended at Zapata Park where the "Mexican" school was located.
As part of the celebration Denver artist, Felipe Dominguez, assisted by Jamie Dominguez and others spend 4 12-hour days completing a new mural painted in Zapata Park. The mural featured Quetzalcoatl, the "feathered-serpent" Mesoamerican deity. Felipe also completed a mural honoring the Maestas case inside the Shooting Stars Cultural and Leadership Center.
Following the unveiling of the new mural inside the Center, Grup Huitzilopochtli, Aztec Dancers from Denver performed a blessing of the park. Shooting Stars hopes that the park will once again become a community hub for the Hispanic community as it historically was.
From 5:30-9PM there was a free concert featuring rappers, Brown Boy and 2MX2 at the park which included free food! Future Town Tour joined the Five Star Riders Car Club & Shooting Stars Cultural and Leadership Center along with The Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley to host these events. Future Town Tour and Warm Cookies of the Revolution, bring nationally known artists to small towns to host free concerts for the communities. Five hundred fresh biscochitos baked by Nancy Ortiz were served as well as 30 gallons of posole made by “Mama Ray”, Cristalray Dominquez.
The event was a huge success and was attended by over 200 people. Thank you to everyone who participated and attended!
