Celebration and commemoration at Historic Zapata Park

"A celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and commemoration of the Maestas Case was held at Historic Zapata Park on Saturday night, and the event was a feast in every way. The car show concluded with a poetry reading of “Wheels of Justice” followed by the “Maestas Case Cruise” where cars proceeded down Ross Avenue – the same route that Hispanic students used to have to walk to school – to Historic Zapata Park, where the “Mexican” school once stood."

Superintendent, Diana Jones, Assistant Superintendent, Luis Murillo, District MTSS Coordinator, Jamie Madigan, Family Engagement Coordinator, Courtney Vigil, and community members, Jamie and Cristalray Dominguez, were all integral in the creation of the Family Center. Alamosa School District entered into a partnership with Shooting Stars Cultural and Leadership Center to open the Family Center. The Family Center is located at 807 Ross Avenue, Alamosa, CO, with the hope to provide a space to empower students and families.

Their work includes gratification projects, youth classes on nutrition basics, middle school suicide prevention, and toy donations.

The duo responded: “We went from engaging in the community, to giving back, to addressing public issues to being involved in systemic change. It all just evolved. Youth Empowerment Summit reaches new heights
